Teen age depression and suicide
Suicide or suicidal attempt is a mental health condition and the fourth leading cause of death among the age in-betweens 15-19 year-olds. Globally around 7,00,000 people die due to suicide every year, in which 1,64,033 Indians committed suicide in 2021. Depression is one of the major mental health conditions that cause suicide or suicidal attempt in present teen age generation.
Why am I depressed?
Despite what you may have been told, depression is not simply caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be cured with medication. Rather, depression is caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors Since the teenage years can be a time of great turmoil and uncertainty, you’re likely facing a host of pressures that could contribute to your depression symptoms. These can range from hormonal changes to problems at home or school or questions about who you are and where you fit in.
As a teen, you’re more likely to suffer from depression if you have a family history of depression or have experienced early childhood trauma, such as the loss of a parent or physical or emotional abuse.
In depression some can experience sad or depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, changes in appetite, weight loss or gain, difficulty in sleep or sleeping too much, loss of energy or increased fatigue, increase in purposeless physical activity, feeling worthless or guilty, difficulty in thinking, concentrating or making decisions, loss of purpose and meaning in life, leads to death wish, planning or suicide attempt.
